Chauncey Billups: Join me and Support John!

I've known John Hickenlooper for many years and have always admired him for his leadership in Denver and his willingness to address challenges through teamwork and collaboration. Success running a city, like winning a basketball game is about pulling together the right people, formulating a plan, and working like crazy to make it happen.

John's done that as a business owner and he's done it as mayor.

Now, John has asked me to support him in the governor's race. I know it seems like a no-brainer considering I endorsed him both times he ran for mayor, but I'm not just going to hand it to him. If he wants my endorsement, he's going to have to beat me in a game of H-O-R-S-E -- only we're going to spell it H-I-C-K-E-N-L-O-O-P-E-R.

And if you contribute $25 and help John hit his $30,000 goal, I'll spot him the H-I-C-K in Hickenlooper.

Some of you may think this is unfair. After all, I'm a professional basketball player and John is a skinny mayor with a funny last name. But after watching John make a layup while riding a bike at a Nuggets game, I think he has a decent chance.

Sure, I hit nine out of every 10 free throws and average over 20 points per game, but John is extremely competitive. The guy just hates to lose. I'm sure he'll step up when it matters most.

And if you contribute $25 and help John hit his end-of-quarter $30,000 fundraising goal, I won't shoot anything outside 30 feet.

In some ways, John and I are a lot alike. We both care deeply about our state and are committed to giving back to the community. I can't walk around lower downtown Denver without thinking about all the hard work that John and other small business owners put into turning that place around.

I share that commitment to the community. That's why I partnered with Lonnie Porter, Regis University men's basketball coach, to start the Porter-Billups Academy to help put at-risk youth on a path to college. It makes us extremely proud to know that about 90 percent of our students will be the first members of their families to attend college.

I feel so blessed to be back in Colorado and playing for the Nuggets. I grew up here. This is my home. And with your help, we can put a skinny mayor with a funny name into the governor's office. That is, of course, as long as he can beat me in a game of horse.

The ball's in your court.

Thanks,

Chauncey Billups

P.S. If you've never played horse, it's pretty simple. Players take turns shooting creative shots and, if you miss, you get a letter. If you get enough letters to spell H-O-R-S-E (or in our case H-I-C-K-E-N-L-O-O-P-E-R) then you lose. Seemed fair to me because what am I going to do… play him one-on-one?
